With a programme dedicated to schools, FUTURES2024 and FUTURES2025 is taking research directly into the classroom to engage young people with groundbreaking research taking place across the South West.
The FUTURES in Schools programme features a range of exciting activities from hands-on demonstrations, immersive theatre, participatory workshops to interactive discussions with researchers
Exeter Science Centre has been working with University of Exeter academics in a series of school events across 2024/2025, to extend their ‘Our World From Space’ programme to feature even more local research!
Their first session in July 2024 was a jam-packed full day event involving over 100 year 7-8 students learning about satellite and Earth-observation science, via hands-on activities and a team mission at the end. In 2025, the team will be visiting 2 more secondary schools in Exeter to deliver 1-hour, hands-on workshops to classes of students.
The following handouts profile four University of Exeter researchers who use satellites in their research. For those interested in doing an activity at home, Dr Liam Berrisford’s profile provides directions on how to make your own air quality monitor.

The University of Plymouth has been working with researchers to bring hands-on learning experiences into schools, inspiring the next generation of scientists and change makers. In November 2024, we partnered with SOS-UK to deliver a Researchers in Schools workshop, where pupils and teachers explored sustainability through interactive sessions and took away resources to share with their wider school communities. Our STEM Showcase in January 2025 was a huge success, welcoming more than 300 students to campus for a day of exciting demonstrations, hands-on activities, and inspiring conversations with researchers at different career stages. We continue to support educators through our Ocean Literacy CPD programme, equipping them with the tools and confidence to engage young people in sustainability and marine science.
